Writing Folders

I love to write with my kids but I always get nervous and question myself......... am I doing it right.?!  I think the most important thing in any new adventure, young or old, is praise! encouragement!! and more praise!!!  Writing is definitely an adventure for our kiddos (and us).  So I just want to say "You are doing a fantastic job!!" Just wanted to share the way I organize my writing folders.  I have always had helpful parents that have volunteered to put these together at the beginning of each year.
First, attach 2 three brad folders together.  This will allow the kids to have 4 pockets in their folder for the different processes of writing and their very own word wall in the middle.  Next, add your labels and word wall templates.  Again, you can have a parent volunteer do this for you or you can allow the kids to cut and paste.

We make a big deal about our writing folders and the kids really feel like these are very special.  I usually get lots of moans and groans when it's time to put them away.....in our special writing tub (not their desk :)

I always allow the kids to write with a pen during the first 3 phases of the writing process.  During the final draft they get to pick their own publishing paper (thematic paper) and write with a pencil. One of my goals for this next school year is to have an Author's Brag Wall.  I would like to spotlight each 2nd grade student throughout the school year.  Hopefully, I'll have pics of that to share when school begins.

I would love to hear how you organize your writing with your students?

Stay cool and have a terrific Tuesday!!

  1. I had my writing folders in binders, but I like your idea a whole lot more & it will take up more space. I think I'm going to use this next year. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I bought the poly folders because I thought they would last longer. However, they are not going together very well. Is there a trick? tlplus3@wi.rr.com
    Thanks, Lori

I Monday MADE IT!!

Hi Sweet and Sassy Friends!!  I have some fun pictures of some things that I have made just in time for school to start and Monday Made It.  {insert cheering and clapping} Okay, first.......I didn't actually make the bench BUT I did repaint it and get it classroom ready.  That should totally count and the fact that I nearly took out the neighbor's window during the process.  {if your my neighbor reading this--I'm sorry and it's okay} Here is the before: {donated by a dear friend-LOVE her} I need you to picture this:  I'm on my front porch with the lid of the bench resting nicely on the back of the bench (easier for sanding).  I'm using a handy-dandy electric sander.  Super powerful.  I place the sander on the lid and push the button..........OH. MY. WORD. the board shoots across the yard towards the neighbors window. YIKES!!  A little embarressing but no one saw, so I pick it up bring it back and this time I hang on to it....

All Things Techy...and FREE

Well ya'll, I have so many wonderful things going on in the classroom and it's all things techy.  I cannot wait to share a few of them with you.   If you haven't stopped by our class blog then you should.     { Mrs. Kirby's Kid's Blog } These authentic pieces of writing just make me so stinkin' happy.  I constantly check my email throughout the weekend to see if they have written anything.  Not because I told them to but because they want to. (insert happy teacher dance right here)  I took my very first student bloggers to the school board and they told our school board what a blog is and why they think it's important.  I gave each one of the kids that presented a small journal, sticky notes and pens to write their ideas about things they'd like to blog about.  This is what their journals look like 2 days later.... These kids cannot get enough!!  Look at all their THOUGHTS... BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!   Look at...
