In the Middle....Somewhere and a FREEBIE

Well, I have marked 2 things off my to do list.  Yay!!....but I'm constantly thinking of more things that I need to do.  Yikes.  I wanted to share some progress pics of the classroom because....really, it helps me feel as though I'm getting some things accomplished.
I'm loving Cara Carroll's bag idea because that space above the cabinets can look so gross. I don't have a Cameo (yet) but this is my version without a it.  This is the mailbox area and the display sheets for the kids work.
This is a pic of my word work area.  That neat little cart in the picture has a whiteboard on one side and cork board on the other, plus an area to store tubs in the middle.  Greatness!!
And while I was busy making new stacks of things to move, my Big Sass was busy making a giant cupcake for my outside bulletin board. I'm so thankful for the time we spent together today.  He is getting so big...{sigh}.
We are picking up his sophomore schedule tomorrow.

I'm sure he is going to be thrilled to know that I've shared his cupcake making skills on my blog BUT I'm just really impressed.  I LOVE this!!  Notice he used crayons for the sprinkles......hmmmm....cute, huh?!  I can't wait to display it in the hall.

The next big thing to accomplish in the classroom is the alphabet above the board. Ugh....that just makes me sweat. :(  It seriously takes me a full week to get that thing straight.

I've also got to get the word wall letters up but as I was pulling the old ones out today, they just looked so ratty and sad.  So, I thought it was time to make some new ones.  I made new word wall letters and I retyped my word wall celebrations.  I  have used these word wall celebrations for yyyyeeeaaarrrss......and when I made them I thought that they were soooo cool.  I used my fancy scissors and very colorful notecards. Ha!  Aren't they cool??  Well, 11 years ago these babies were cool!!!

These are great and 11 years later the kids still enjoy doing them.  I usually do this every Monday when I am introducing new sight words to the kids.  I put all the celebration cards into a bag and I pick someone to pull out a celebration.  We celebrate and add that word to the word wall. I keep the celebration bag on a hook right next to our word wall.  It can be a great filler too. I would love for you to stop by my TPT store and pick it up.  It's a FREEBIE.  I just ask that you leave me LOVE, I love to hear what all of you think.

Stay Sweet Friends!

Just a Little Research

There is nothing more exciting than to hear kids talk with each other about the things that they are learning.  I LOVE to listen to these conversations and the best way to get these conversations going is to start research.   I used the books that came with our Social Studies curriculum and I let them choose who they wanted to research.  It's a win-win because I believe there is power in choice .  I choose the list and they choose their person.;)  We started this project by discussing the the things that I expected them to find out about their person.  As a whole group lesson we completed the same research information on another person that was not on the list.  This way I could model each day what I expected from the students. We used websites that are available through our school library and KidRex .  This is a great site that is safe and easy for the kids to use. I should have started this post about how lapbooks ...

What'cha Reading?!

We just cannot get enough of the book Pictures of Hollis Woods !  Have you read it?  It's been a fantastic book that has generated so many thoughtful and meaningful conversations within my classroom.   Is it bad that I secretly LOVE it when the kids beg me to read....ONE....MORE...CHAPTER...PUHLEEEAAZZE?!   I t makes my teacher heart happy, happy, happy.  We spent some time writing letters to Hollis giving her helpful advice. I have the most thoughtful and kindest kids! We've looked for similarities and differences between Hollis and a close friend of ours. Wow, I learned a lot about their friends! Student partners had jobs that I assigned from my Literature Circle group packet from the fabulous 4th Grade Frolics .  They completed and shared their questions, connections, and favorite parts with the class to create their own discussions. I LOVE this packet! It has been a fantastic unit to use with my literature circles so I just change...

Day 7 Disneyland in a Day

Okay moms, let’s talk about Disney.   I’m going to be real honest with you.   The notebooks you create and the maps you print out, the discounts and packages and clubs and bracelets and t-shirts and rewards make me sweat.   I seriously get overwhelmed and want nothing to do with this place OR maybe I’m just jealous that you’ve figured out the ins and outs of Disney.   I’m simple.   I like simple and we just kept it really simple.   Our plan was to spend ONE day in Disneyland on a tight budget and have the most magical time ever.    We woke up a 4:30 a.m.—we were a little excited and needed about an hour drive time to get through LA traffic. We made it to the gates before they opened and just stood there to take in the excitement of just being at the most magical place earth.   I looked at all the moms with strollers adorned with shoe caddies that held every family member’s drinks for the day.   The basket...
