Find Your Match B2S

While I wait patiently for the wax to do its school floor magic I continue to plan procrastinate. <-truth
Each week at my school we spend about 20 minutes completing what we call R time activities. This time is used to build classroom/school community, respect for others, respect for property, and learn to work cooperatively with a partner or group. We sing a song, find a partner, shake their hand, look at them while speaking in complete sentences, and work together on an assignment or a mission.

I've created partner match-up cards for the first nine weeks of school to help students find a partner while reviewing a previously taught skill. These cards are quickly passed out and the students find their match to determine who they will be working with.

Our very first back to school R-time activity will be to Find a Friend...
First, they will look for a friend that fits their card AND they must also match that friend's card.  It will create discussion among all the students.

Once there is a match between 2 students they will then discuss what they find out about each other. After everyone has found a match they will introduce their friend to the class and tell the class what they learned about their friend.

Finally, they will complete A New Friend Venn with their partner.
This particular partner match is the ACTIVITY and the match up cards. You can pick up this activity {here}.

Happy Friday!

Just a Little Research

There is nothing more exciting than to hear kids talk with each other about the things that they are learning.  I LOVE to listen to these conversations and the best way to get these conversations going is to start research.   I used the books that came with our Social Studies curriculum and I let them choose who they wanted to research.  It's a win-win because I believe there is power in choice .  I choose the list and they choose their person.;)  We started this project by discussing the the things that I expected them to find out about their person.  As a whole group lesson we completed the same research information on another person that was not on the list.  This way I could model each day what I expected from the students. We used websites that are available through our school library and KidRex .  This is a great site that is safe and easy for the kids to use. I should have started this post about how lapbooks ...

What'cha Reading?!

We just cannot get enough of the book Pictures of Hollis Woods !  Have you read it?  It's been a fantastic book that has generated so many thoughtful and meaningful conversations within my classroom.   Is it bad that I secretly LOVE it when the kids beg me to read....ONE....MORE...CHAPTER...PUHLEEEAAZZE?!   I t makes my teacher heart happy, happy, happy.  We spent some time writing letters to Hollis giving her helpful advice. I have the most thoughtful and kindest kids! We've looked for similarities and differences between Hollis and a close friend of ours. Wow, I learned a lot about their friends! Student partners had jobs that I assigned from my Literature Circle group packet from the fabulous 4th Grade Frolics .  They completed and shared their questions, connections, and favorite parts with the class to create their own discussions. I LOVE this packet! It has been a fantastic unit to use with my literature circles so I just change...

Day 7 Disneyland in a Day

Okay moms, let’s talk about Disney.   I’m going to be real honest with you.   The notebooks you create and the maps you print out, the discounts and packages and clubs and bracelets and t-shirts and rewards make me sweat.   I seriously get overwhelmed and want nothing to do with this place OR maybe I’m just jealous that you’ve figured out the ins and outs of Disney.   I’m simple.   I like simple and we just kept it really simple.   Our plan was to spend ONE day in Disneyland on a tight budget and have the most magical time ever.    We woke up a 4:30 a.m.—we were a little excited and needed about an hour drive time to get through LA traffic. We made it to the gates before they opened and just stood there to take in the excitement of just being at the most magical place earth.   I looked at all the moms with strollers adorned with shoe caddies that held every family member’s drinks for the day.   The basket...
