What'cha Reading?!

We just cannot get enough of the book Pictures of Hollis Woods!  Have you read it?  It's been a fantastic book that has generated so many thoughtful and meaningful conversations within my classroom.

Is it bad that I secretly LOVE it when the kids beg me to read....ONE....MORE...CHAPTER...PUHLEEEAAZZE?!
It makes my teacher heart happy, happy, happy.

We spent some time writing letters to Hollis giving her helpful advice. I have the most thoughtful and kindest kids!

We've looked for similarities and differences between Hollis and a close friend of ours. Wow, I learned a lot about their friends!

Student partners had jobs that I assigned from my Literature Circle group packet from the fabulous 4th Grade Frolics.  They completed and shared their questions, connections, and favorite parts with the class to create their own discussions.

I LOVE this packet! It has been a fantastic unit to use with my literature circles so I just changed it up and incorporated it with the whole group while I was reading this book to the class. They enjoyed completing their jobs and our class discussions were ran by the students.

Have you heard of Plickers?? Well, I tried this app in the classroom to check comprehension of our story. Seriously.......it was the coolest and strangest thing ever! It's free and I REEEEALLY think you should check it out.

The kids hold up their answer and you scan the room with your phone or ipad. You will need to type the student's names in the computer but that's easy peasy. Type the questions that you want them to answer and you're ready to go.
Then you immediately can see who got it wrong and who got it right. You can print a report from your computer if you'd like to use the data. I showed the kids how it worked and they were amazed by it too.

How does it do that?!

So COOL!! Oh and it's FREE. Seriously, you should check it out. A great change from paper and pencil.

Behavior that Makes Cents!

I've decided for this next school year to implement $$ into my behavior clip chart.  Our school has certain colors and points that they want us to use and deduct from each child's conduct grade based on the child's color/conduct clip.  So each year I jazz up my color chart BUT this year I'm implementing Coins.......get it???!!!  Behavior that Makes Cents!!  Okay.......this is how it will work in my classroom.  Each day the students will stamp their behavior calendar with a coin stamp based on our color chart.  For example, black will be used for a quarter because black is considered exceptional behavior throughout the day. They will use a green stamp for dimes, yellow stamp for nickels, and a red stamp for a penny.  Although, I rarely have color changes, I truly feel like this will motivate them to not only KNOW their coins but be able to add them up.  They will NEED to know how much they have in order to spend their money on Friday.   ...

HO HO Oh No!!!

If cameras were in the classroom AT&T would be calling me for their next commercial.  I LOVE these commercials because I feel like everyone in the world gets a little glimpse of the great conversations that take place in the classroom of young kids.  Sometimes the most amazing conversations take place and then sometimes......not so much..  Okay, back to "HO". I had given my kids all the letters in the words GROUNDHOG DAY.  I then challenged them to come up with 25 new words using these specific letters.  They are hard at work when I get this question "Can I use the word "ho"?  Me: "Well, no because hoe (then I precede to tell them about a garden hoe and what it is used for-you know, building a little background knowledge, just in case) is spelled with an "e" and you don't have an "e" available to you."   Another student says, "I mean the other "ho"."  Me: "Well, that's not really appropria...
