Sweetest Seconds

Well, where do I begin...I didn't share a room reveal because I think I might have been pouting.  I haven't given you at least a monthly up to date because I have been trying to wrap my head around my teaching career.  There is no doubt that I LOVE teaching and the indescribable thrill I get when kids are excited to learn but things have changed so much.  Yes, I prayed and prayed about my move and I really feel like I'm exactly where God wants me to be BUT it's been hard.

14 years of teaching and I feel like a new teacher again.....lost, scared, and constantly second guessing myself.  In my new school no one knows me, there are rules for everything that I do, and at least 10 meetings per every rule to train me in the rules.  I left a place where everyone stopped and hugged to a very different environment.  I really wallowed in self-pity the first few weeks but I have since realized that was not going to work for me.  I need to pick myself up, smile and make a difference.......in whatever I'm doing.

I think it's so interesting that I changed the name of my blog to "sweetest seconds in a day".  I liked that name because it could refer to my sweet second graders or a small moment in time during my day.  At first all my "sweetest seconds" were only at home with my favorite people but I needed to transfer this mindset to school.   Honestly, that is what I have really clung to these past few months while at school.  I tell myself "just pick a sweet moment and hang-on to it".

Some days it's one of my little guys saying: "Mrs. Kirby, can I ask you something?" Me: "Yes, of course." Little guy: "I love you."  Haha! Yes, we discuss a question and a statement every time but it still makes me chuckle.  I hang on to this.

Some days it's a kiddo literally working up a sweat trying to read, I seriously have NEVER seen someone work so hard and be so determined to figure out words and sounds.  I hang on to this.

Other days it's listening to the kids repeatedly say "thank you" for bringing them a treat.  I hang on to this.

Sometimes it's the kids' BIG hugs when you put a secret little note in their folder telling their parents just how amazing I think their kiddo is.  Their appreciation for being recognized and celebrated is some of the sweetest seconds in my day and I hang on to them.

I made a quiet deal with myself after the first few weeks of school.  I made myself promise to pick at least one positive thing each day to focus on and hang on to.  The positive "sweetest seconds" are sometimes the fact that it didn't rain and I didn't have to transport 21 second graders from a portable with 5 umbrellas to a building across a parking lot.

I have a lot to be thankful for and I am blessed in so many ways that I feel guilty for sharing this post.  I think we all need reminders to focus on the what is important and how our mindset can effect everything that we do.  "Conquer mind, Conquer all" - My favorite airman lives this motto and there is so much truth in that little statement.

I'm looking forward to sharing some of my "sweetest seconds" in my day.

Behavior that Makes Cents!

I've decided for this next school year to implement $$ into my behavior clip chart.  Our school has certain colors and points that they want us to use and deduct from each child's conduct grade based on the child's color/conduct clip.  So each year I jazz up my color chart BUT this year I'm implementing Coins.......get it???!!!  Behavior that Makes Cents!!  Okay.......this is how it will work in my classroom.  Each day the students will stamp their behavior calendar with a coin stamp based on our color chart.  For example, black will be used for a quarter because black is considered exceptional behavior throughout the day. They will use a green stamp for dimes, yellow stamp for nickels, and a red stamp for a penny.  Although, I rarely have color changes, I truly feel like this will motivate them to not only KNOW their coins but be able to add them up.  They will NEED to know how much they have in order to spend their money on Friday.   ...

I Monday MADE IT!!

Hi Sweet and Sassy Friends!!  I have some fun pictures of some things that I have made just in time for school to start and Monday Made It.  {insert cheering and clapping} Okay, first.......I didn't actually make the bench BUT I did repaint it and get it classroom ready.  That should totally count and the fact that I nearly took out the neighbor's window during the process.  {if your my neighbor reading this--I'm sorry and it's okay} Here is the before: {donated by a dear friend-LOVE her} I need you to picture this:  I'm on my front porch with the lid of the bench resting nicely on the back of the bench (easier for sanding).  I'm using a handy-dandy electric sander.  Super powerful.  I place the sander on the lid and push the button..........OH. MY. WORD. the board shoots across the yard towards the neighbors window. YIKES!!  A little embarressing but no one saw, so I pick it up bring it back and this time I hang on to it....

All Things Techy...and FREE

Well ya'll, I have so many wonderful things going on in the classroom and it's all things techy.  I cannot wait to share a few of them with you.   If you haven't stopped by our class blog then you should.     { Mrs. Kirby's Kid's Blog } These authentic pieces of writing just make me so stinkin' happy.  I constantly check my email throughout the weekend to see if they have written anything.  Not because I told them to but because they want to. (insert happy teacher dance right here)  I took my very first student bloggers to the school board and they told our school board what a blog is and why they think it's important.  I gave each one of the kids that presented a small journal, sticky notes and pens to write their ideas about things they'd like to blog about.  This is what their journals look like 2 days later.... These kids cannot get enough!!  Look at all their THOUGHTS... BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!   Look at...
