Happy Birthday, America! {{GIVEAWAY & FREEBIES}}

Happy Birthday, AMERICA!!

Our plan is to swim in the lake, grill hamburgers, watch fireworks, and ride bikes.  ALL American, right?!!
 I'm sure we'll have lots of pictures soon.

In the meantime I've been sewing away and getting things together for Monday Made It and America's Birthday! Stop by Fourth Grade Frolics to see what other teachers have been up to.
  Nothing too exciting...unless dressing up your coffee makes you giddy!! 
 Now that is one good-looking coffee...

Now I think it's only fair to share the FAILS that we have as we are learning.  If you can't laugh at yourself then........you're probably NO FUN to be around.

I thought the anchors were super cute and I thought they would make a really cute gift for a friend.  During the process of making this super cute anchor gift I discovered that directional print can be a little tricky.

 It totally works if you're into upside down anchors. I thought I'd try it again.
That is MOST DEFINITELY a FAIL! 
Good news, I figured out what I was doing wrong so if you win and want anchors I have a pretty good idea what to do now.

This activity is my kids all-time favorite activity to do during small group but it needed a little refreshing. 
All you need is:
  

 I covered my cans with new labels.


 The kids have to read the words before they can stack. This is a fun and easy activity to make. I also made sight word flashcards for the year.
 This unit contains flashcards for 300 sight words that your 2nd graders need to know. It also has fun bracelets for your kids to wear home the day you introduce the words.

    Those coffee cozies are so cute! I did the same thing with a Pringles can and made a game out of it. There are so many uses for the everyday products we use around our house!!

    My favorite drink? Definetely an Iced Tea (often referred to as a Big Black Boring Iced Tea by my son--who works at Starbucks). I love your Pringle can idea. I'm thinking you could also use empty "wipes" containers. Thank you for sharing.

    My favorite drink is black coffee! But I also enjoy Passion tea! I loved your idea of the pringle can and sight words! Great job there as well. I sew or used too and it is tricky to get it done right...

Speed Dating or 2nd Grade Letter Writing

Well friends, I understand the confusion.  I've never been apart of speed dating but I imagine it just like the letters of these 2nd grade students.  (sorry for the bad pics...that's kinda how I roll) Ya'll these crack me up. I picture these being read without coming up for breath until you get to the last line -which is the same pic ture I get in my head of someone speed dating. Thank you Mrs. Beasley for being our pen pals.  The kids LOVED doing this and guess what?  They want to write ag ai n....this is AUTHENTIC learning!  Okay, we can write some more if that's what ya'll want to do. ;-)  One of the books that I read to the clas s before we started writing our friendly letter was Dear Mr. Blueberry . What'cha Reading?!

We just cannot get enough of the book Pictures of Hollis Woods !  Have you read it?  It's been a fantastic book that has generated so many thoughtful and meaningful conversations within my classroom.   Is it bad that I secretly LOVE it when the kids beg me to read....ONE....MORE...CHAPTER...PUHLEEEAAZZE?!   I t makes my teacher heart happy, happy, happy.  We spent some time writing letters to Hollis giving her helpful advice. I have the most thoughtful and kindest kids! We've looked for similarities and differences between Hollis and a close friend of ours. Wow, I learned a lot about their friends! Student partners had jobs that I assigned from my Literature Circle group packet from the fabulous 4th Grade Frolics .  They completed and shared their questions, connections, and favorite parts with the class to create their own discussions.
